Renewables
Packaging powered by clean energy.
The burning of fossil fuels for electricity and heat remains the single largest source of global greenhouse gas emissions. At McLaren, we are committed to changing this by investing in renewable energy and reducing our reliance on non-renewable power. By generating clean electricity on-site and supporting energy efficiency, we are contributing to a cleaner atmosphere and a more sustainable future.
Solar Energy at McLaren
In Port Glasgow, we operate the largest solar panel installation in the Inverclyde area. With 1,520 panels producing 375kW of power, our system is 150 times the size of a typical residential installation and generates close to 400,000 kWh of renewable electricity each year. That is enough to power more than 160 homes annually.
Packaging Production Powered by the Sun
Manufacturing packaging is energy intensive, but our investment in renewables is making a measurable difference.
Our solar array:
- Spans two of our main production facilities in Port Glasgow
- Provides one third of our daily electricity requirements from clean energy
- Returns surplus energy to the national grid during evenings and weekends
Since 2015, solar power has supplied 33 percent of our electricity needs, helping us cut over 1,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This saving is equivalent to charging more than 97 million smartphones.
Looking Ahead
Our solar power investment is only the beginning. As part of our Sustainable. For Life. strategy and our Race to Net Zero commitments, we will continue to expand our use of renewable energy and energy storage. Our goal is to power an even greater share of our operations with clean, low-carbon electricity, helping us deliver packaging that is both innovative and responsible.

We’re working hard to reduce our energy consumption and our carbon footprint. Here are some latest stats from our solar installation
